    I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s presentation. As a student, what stood out to me the most was his explanation of mindfulness meditation and differentiating the actual goal of meditation from the commonly held belief about the goal of meditation. Most people, myself included, think of meditation as something that can be achieved when one has the time, meanwhile, as Dr. Kabat-Zinn has stated, it is certainly not the means to an end. Instead, it has no final end and is a process by which all senses of the individual are awakened. I believe this understanding is crucial, particularly for prospective meditators.
    I also enjoyed his point about the human race being an auto-immune disease on our planet. With the constant distinction made by using possessive pronouns, individuals are bound to become self-destructive, which eventually reflects the self-destruction nature of society as a whole. The awareness of oneself and of the one’s surroundings and senses is an interesting key factor in the necessary understanding of the world.

    Kabat-Zinn gives a fascinating and optimistic talk about the possibilities and transformative potential of mindfulness. I appreciated some of the historical reflections offered about mindfulness practice and techniques as well as reports of recent research. Most of all, the idea that “real meditation practice is how you live your life … moment to moment” inspires me to want to “increase my moments of clear seeing.” Much nourishing food for thought here…

    Coming from an Indian family, I have learned to meditate and have seen my father meditate since I was a kid. The way I have grown up looking at it is more of a routine or structure to life that helps an individual lead a calm and healthy lifestyle. However, Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s approach toward mindfulness meditation has opened a door of acceptance and fundamental values of human life. Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s idea of “growing down into the soul rather than growing up” is extremely fascinating and true eye opener. Like he mentioned in his lecture, being mindful is not only about being attentive but also to be able to take a note of the fundamental things that we tend to take for granted. Dr. Kabat-Zinn then very smoothly transitioned into talking about body politics while tying in medical and health benefits. His example about patients receiving treatments for Psoriasis particularly interests me and I would like to gain more information about the healing process and how mindfulness meditation accelerates the healing process. Overall, Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s presentation on mindfulness meditation was truly very informative and an enjoyable experience.

    I appreciated Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s recognition that good psychotherapy is a meditative practice. We must be present for our clients and not only watch, but also attend to what is happening in the room. This point further convinced me of the professional value of establishing a personal mindfulness practice.
