One Response to NP0050: Is Mindfulness Enough?

Hello, Michael. I very much enjoyed your presentation, as I have several you’ve done at various Erickson conferences and other continuing ed courses I’ve chosen. I have two thoughts.
    1) When one studies actual Buddhist teachers and their students’ experiences, what you find is that there are many (and I mean MANY) exercises, meditations, contemplations, etc., that are available. I gather that one thing that’s so important to practitioners about finding a teacher is that, like the therapist you describe, the teacher reads the person, where s/he is in her/his growth, what specific problem s/he is working on, how specifically s/he is stuck. So in this sense, your criticism of the spiritual/Buddhist approach may well apply to more superficial or global “techniques” or packages, but not of the “real thing”.

    2) I completely agree with your analysis of interpersonal influence and how powerful it is. You mentioned how weighted down you and your colleagues are by being “hypnotists” because of all the associations of that term in our culture. But when you fully explain hypnosis’ elements, I beging to wonder: what ISN’T hypnosis if two people are talking (even if one is talking at the other via the tv screen)? When I say to someone, earnestly, “Have a great day!” or “Pass the salt”, might these not be hypnotic suggestions, if the person responds in certain ways? What are the boundaries of hypnotic communications or relationships that define the area?

Thanks very much and keep up your very interesting work!
