326 EFT with Gays and Lesbians

Mark Kaupp Mark Kaupp • Friday Afternoon

When same-sex partners enter couples therapy, attachment issues often take center stage. The reasons become clear as clients reveal stories of being ostracized or kicked out of their families because of their sexual orientation. In addition, they have often absorbed and internalized the homophobia of their surroundings, leading to an ongoing angry,

self-critical voice in their heads. This workshop presents ways to assist same-sex couples struggling with these and other attachment issues through the use of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT). You’ll learn how to take an “attachment history” to better understand the background and role of attachment in each individual’s life and how it influences the couple’s relationship. We’ll explore how to establish an environment of safety and security that’ll encourage clients to access the primary emotions around attachment issues and how to facilitate enactments between partners that’ll help both of them better deal with the fears of abandonment and rejection by turning toward each other for love, safety, and security.

Mark Kaupp, Psy.D. is a certified EFT trainer and professor at Alliant International University and San Diego State University. He has a private practice, conducts seminars and trainings on EFT, and was featured on CBS’ 48 Hours as the EFT therapist working with a couple in creating a more loving relationship.
