LOCATION: REGENCY BALLROOM
An Evening with Maria Bamford
Maria Bamford—an alternative comedian whose wildly inventive riffs about her inner struggles, complicated family life, and the world’s obtuseness about mental illness has brought her widespread acclaim—will perform her fearless standup act. She’s turned the chaos and pain of her various afflictions—depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, chronic anxiety, and intermittent suicidal ideation—into hilarious, if edgy, comedy. New Yorker critic Emily Nussbaum calls her “the comic’s comic, with a stylized, experimental act that lingers in the mind” and her work “radical—as unsettling as anything Andy Kaufman ever did.”
She’s appeared regularly on television, including in the series Arrested Development. She’s done two Comedy Central specials and has made appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and David Letterman. Of special note is the wild inventiveness of her various web shows: The Maria Bamford Show, the special special special (in which she performs a standup show in her home for an audience consisting of her parents), and Ask My Mom! (an “advice show” in which she plays both the earnest advice seekers and her own clueless mother. Most recently, she released the Comedy Central album Ask Me About My New God!
For all the sharpness of her comedy, Bamford is an irresistibly winning performer who has an authentic sweetness and vulnerability. Here’s your chance to see her acclaimed standup routine live.
