LOCATION: SUITE 368W

Martha StrausFor troubled girls lost in a world of neglectful adults, it’s crucial for therapists to actively provide the adult moral compass these confused and often isolated young people need as they develop a sense of adult responsibility and direction.
This workshop will focus on the importance of using the therapeutic relationship to guide these clients.

Discover how to:

  • Differentiate between watered-down, laissez faire “adult” therapy and an approach that includes moral guidance and judicious advice giving
  • Practice techniques for finding the balance between challenging these clients and maintaining their trust while also examining the limits of confidentiality with young girls
  • Use mirroring, mentalization, validation, self-disclosure, and the sharing of opinions and judgments to enhance the therapeutic relationship

Martha Straus, PhD, a professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology at Antioch University New England, is the author of No-Talk Therapy for Children and Adolescents and Adolescent Girls in Crisis: Intervention and Hope.
