124 Navigating the New DSM-5

Martha Teater • Thursday All Day
LOCATION: AMBASSADOR ROOM

Martha TeaterThe recent introduction of DSM-5–the most important revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 20 years–requires clinicians to make various changes to the way they assess and diagnose clients. This comprehensive workshop will walk you through the changes and their potential impact on your practice.

Some of the changes to the DSM-5 we’ll highlight and interpret include:

  • The elimination of the five-axis system and the introduction of the new severity scales that relate directly to the symptoms
  • New criteria for PTSD, depressive disorders, substance-use disorders, and others
  • The (still controversial) removal of Asperger’s disorder and the elimination of the bereavement exclusion
  • The introduction of a variety of new diagnoses, as well as other revisions

Martha Teater, MA, LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Waynesville, North Carolina. She was a collaborating clinical investigator for the DSM-5 field trials for routine clinical practice, and has trained thousands of clinicians on the DSM-5.
