When therapists gather, we talk too much about therapeutic strategies (where to go with a client) and not enough about therapeutic craft (how to get there, moment to moment). Even when we watch videos of master therapists, we often miss the small steps they took that made the therapy work. Above all, we get too few opportunities to examine mistakes in therapeutic craft—the miscues that help us learn how to get better, not just more experienced, over the years. In this workshop, we’ll examine therapeutic craft with the help of clips from film and TV. Using a lively group interaction format, we’ll put our heads together on how to avoid the missteps portrayed and turn difficult moments into healing ones. Especially featured will be the work of Dr. Paul Weston on the HBO series In Treatment. Come enjoy and challenge yourself as we dig deeper into the fascinating craft of psychotherapy.
