Perhaps the most critical moment in couples therapy is when a couple on the verge of divorce first walks in your consulting room—your every word and gesture can have huge repercussions for the outcome of the marriage. This workshop focus on how to bring together polarized partners, especially when children are involved, by providing practical skills and techniques to reframe, persuade, and instill optimism. Through videos of couples sessions, we’ll explore the moment-by-moment impact of the therapist’s language and choices. We’ll discuss how to challenge statements such as, “I love him but I’m not in love with him,” or “We’re only married because of the kids.” You’ll leave with a new set of practical skills for helping couples not only face their immediate crisis, but also develop a realistic sense of evolving hope for the future.
