David Wexler • Friday All Day
Engaging men in simply coming to therapy may be difficult, but it’s only the first step. What happens after that? This workshop will teach you strategies to move your male clients toward facing that next level of emotional risk, intimacy, and authenticity in their relationships. We’ll begin by exploring the defenses and perception of shame that keep men from confronting their emotions. We’ll walk you through how to develop a therapeutic relationship based on straightforward guidance and “guy talk,” rather than ambiguous “therapy-speak.” You’ll learn specific techniques to counteract male “relational dread” and how to coach them to communicate in a “related” way. You’ll walk away with new skills for helping men discover how authenticity and emotional honesty can be the ultimate antidepressant. (This session will continue with Workshop 316.)
David Wexler, Ph.D., executive director of the Relationship Training Institute, is the author of five books, including Men in Therapy: New Approaches for Effective Treatment.
