Wendy Behary • Friday All Day
Narcissists are notoriously difficult to work with. They can be arrogant, condescending, lacking in empathy, and so self-absorbed they seem incapable of forming genuine relationships with anyone, including therapists. So how can we summon compassion for narcissists and engage them in treatment? Since being “nice” is usually ineffective with such clients, this session will present a different method: empathic confrontation. You’ll learn strategies for being direct with these clients and for becoming more aware of and managing the vulnerabilities or roiling emotions they can trigger in you. We’ll practice techniques that will help you gain and retain leverage, avoid power struggles, and maintain compassion in ways that will also help the client begin to understand and change negative behavior patterns. This integrated approach incorporates cognitive restructuring, attachment, and re-parenting work, along with behavioral-skills training and experiential techniques. (This session will continue with Workshop 313.)
