Unfortunately, few have the high-level relationship skills needed to achieve this kind of ideal partnership. In this workshop, we’ll explore a model that openly acknowledges some of the fundamental obstacles to forming that kind of union--the asymmetry between the relational appetites and skills men and women bring to marriage--and that doesn’t back off challenging the losing strategies both partners use. You’ll learn the core skills of how to coach couples to proactively go for what they want, speak to repair, listen with empathy, respond with generosity, and take the time to cherish each other. We’ll also focus on how therapists can directly, provocatively, and productively present the blunt truth of what they see happening in a relationship, without the need to blur their impact by trying to be consistently evenhanded. (This session will continue with Workshop 311.)
