Eastern wisdom traditions emphasizing detachment, surrender, and witnessing are sometimes seen as therapeutic panaceas these days. This course looks at some of the limitations of these approaches and explores more deeply the distinction between true psychological "healing" and merely learning to witness one's emotions and thoughts with more detachment. You'll learn about Internal Family Systems (IFS), a model for helping clients harness their inherent capacity for compassion and Self-Leadership as they actively shift their relationship to troubling inner states and other problematic patterns. Special attention will be given to dealing with cases involving trauma and dissociation.
Richard Schwartz, Psy. D., is the originator of the Internal Family Systems Model and the author of five books, including Internal Family Systems Therapy.
Session 1: Limitations of Traditional Mindfulness Practices
Session 2: Healing and Self-Leadership: An Introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Session 3: Experiential Exercises: Exploring the Inner World
Session 4: Demonstrating IFS--Part 1, Contacting the Core Self
Session 5: Demonstrating IFS--Part 2, Treating Trauma
Session 6: Special Applications of IFS

1. Explain the role of the "Self" as the presenter uses the term
2. Discuss the role of mindfulness in self-awareness
3. Describe the essential features of the Internal Family Systems model
4. Name 3 ways therapists can help clients achieve Self-Leadership
