Whatever Happened to Parental Authority?

Parental AuthorityBy Rich Simon It seems astonishing that even just two or three decades ago, parents not only pretty much knew what was expected of them to turn their offspring into civilized adults, but they could actually count on society to back them up. Even more astounding, kids seemed to understand this, too. Even if they rebelled against, yelled about, or sullenly resented how “unfair” adults were, they seemed to acknowledge adult authority and realize that they would just have to wait until they turned 18 to get for themselves the keys to the kingdom of grown-up independence.

Pat Ogden’s Luncheon Address

Body Wisdom, Lost and Found

Today’s luncheon address featuring Pat Ogden, a clinical leader on the forefront of incorporating bodywork into therapy, was fabulous. Throughout her address, she used video demonstrations to reflect her insights about integrating mind/body into therapy, which made everything she was saying feel both so present and so vivid. She also had us “try on” different gestures and postures to see how they feel.

In these days when everything tends to be so fast moving, it was interesting and nice to take some time to think about eye contact and nonverbal communication and how it influences how we think and feel as well as how others react to us.

If you were able to attend today’s luncheon event, what did you think? Do you use any mind/body approaches in your work? What was most interesting or relevant to your personal or professional life?

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend Pat Ogden's luncheon address but was pleased to have attended her all day workshop on Sensorimotor Therapy with Children and Adolescents. As a dance/movement therapist with over 30 years experience working with children, adolescents and adults, I found her presentation stimulating as well as validating. The concept of working with the body and body movement is a familiar one to me, and one that the field of dance/movement therapy is based on. I would welcome the opportunity to have a round table discussion, or panel presentation, with other like-minded clinicians/practitioners where we might talk about how our approaches are similar and how they differ from one another. The field is so rich and it would be so exciting to share our stories with one another.
