One of the greatest sources of conflict and pain in clients’ lives is their complex experience of passing through many roles and “selves”--many of which they dislike and wish to disown--every day, when what they really desire is to experience a sense of integration and wholeness. Through the cases presented in this consultation group, we’ll explore a safe, sensitive way, using the Internal Family Systems approach, to gently and compassionately seek out the wounded and frightened internal aspects of the self in order to reveal the Core Self--the deep, spiritual force within each of us. Through group analysis and discussion of specific cases, you’ll learn how to help clients communicate with disowned and disliked parts of themselves and connect with the deep, calm, compassionate Self that’s the source of healing, joy, inner leadership, and transcendence.

Meet the Instructor

Richard Schwartz, Ph.D., is an acknowledged trailblazer, whose Internal Family Systems model (IFS), has fundamentally redefined and clarified what we mean when we talk about an “inner self”. In the consultations, he’ll explore how to approach each case from an IFS perspective, demonstrating how therapy can elicit the healing power of the core Self to soothe, support, and ultimately resolve emotional wounds carried by the conflicting inner parts of a client.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss and name the primary goals of working with the Core Self
2. Explain the Internal Family Systems approach to accessing the Core Self
3. Describe how to help clients access their Core Self’s wisdom and compassion
